How to Prepare for a Root Canal

root canal in Ponte Vedra FloridaIf you are one of the 15 million Americans who has to get a root canal every year, you are clearly not alone. By replacing the infected pulp of your tooth, a root canal can give you back your ability to chew and function like normal. As one of the most routine procedures that Dr. David Sorenson at Blue Water Dental of St. John’s performs, you can rest assured that you will be in the best hands during the entire procedure. So, how can you prepare for your root canal and what can you expect from the procedure? Read on to learn more.

Stop Smoking

If you are a chronic smoker, then this step is going to be particularly hard for you to complete. However, it’s important that you stop smoking at least a few days before your root canal because smoking can lower your body’s ability to heal after surgery. If you are a smoker and need help quitting, talk to David Sorenson about your options.

Don’t Drink Alcohol

Yes, it’s true that alcoholic beverages like red wine contain heart-healthy additives like resveratrol. However, alcohol is also considered to be a blood thinner which isn’t suitable for any patient heading into surgery. For at least 48 hour hours before your root canal, make sure that you are limiting your alcohol consumption.

Schedule a Ride

Depending on the type of sedation we have to use during your root canal, you may be encouraged to find a ride home. So you won’t have to worry about a ride on the day of your surgery, try to arrange it with your friends or family members at least a few days before— that way you can come to your surgery feeling more relaxed.

Getting a root canal is needed when there is extreme decay or infection in the pulp of the root— leaving you in pain and discomfort. If you think you need a root canal or if you have one scheduled but would like to learn more about the procedure itself, contact Dr. David Sorenson at Blue Water Dental of St. John’s today!
