3 Types of Dental Fillings to Choose From

Dental Fillings Ponte Vedra, FLCavities are one of the most common oral issues that Dr. David Sorenson sees here at Blue Water Dental of St. John’s. And although cavities are almost always treated with a filling, patients typically aren’t aware of the different types of filling options that are available. From composite resin to porcelain, this article will discuss three of the most common types of filling materials. Read on to learn more.

Composite Resin

Composite resin is a tooth-colored, plastic substance that is used to fill in the hole in your tooth and seal it off from further decay or infection. As one of the most popular types of fillings, composite resin fillings blend in with your teeth and typically last about five to seven years on average.

Silver Amalgam

These fillings were especially popular up until about the early 2000s when patients started wanting tooth colored ones. Made up of a combination of metals, silver amalgam fillings are long lasting and durable. In fact, the average silver amalgam filling lasts about 10 to 15 years, which will give you plenty of wear and tear.

Porcelain

There are many unique benefits of porcelain fillings including their inability to expand and contract in different temperatures— leaving them staying in place for longer. Additionally, porcelain fillings are the most wear-resistant filling and can last around 20-30 years on average. Similar to your tooth’s enamel, porcelain veneers are strong and durable.

One of the most important things to know about any filling is that they require you to take care of them. The more you brush your teeth and avoid sticky foods like taffy, the longer your fillings will last. If you are in need of a new filing and would like to learn more about your options, contact Dr. David Sorenson at Blue Water Dental of St. John’s today!
